Arcanum 1780: A New World
Second Ottoman Empire
Second Ottoman Empire
After the Event, survivors from the Ottoman Empire and the nations of the Arabian peninsula mostly fled south, and found sanctuary in Zanzibar, the small Swahili city and island state which had been conquered by Oman in the late 17th century. By the time of the Event, Oman was well on its way to controlling the entire Swahili coast of East Africa and venturing further inland. With an influx of Arabic and Turkish people – including scientists, scholars, soldiers and administrators, the enclave flourished even though Oman, which had been on the fringes of the Event, was no longer in existence as a viable nation.
Trading in slaves and ivory to India helped the new nation grow, and soon it had a capital at Zanzibar and flourishing ports at Lamu, Mombasa, Kilwa and Dar Es Salaam. In the meantime, Turkish immigrants had been moving into positions of increasing wealth and responsibility until, in the 1760s, the daughter of the Sultan married the son of a refugee Ottoman prince and the New Ottoman Empire was founded.
Today, the Ottomans control all of Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique – a huge area of land. Their civilization is Muslim, but scholarly, relatively open and committed to progress. Ottoman magicians are well-versed in their work, although they have concentrated on the philosophical side of magic and on practical applications of magic on its own, rather than welding magic to technology. It’s merchants trade with the Indian nations and with Natal to the South while its military concentrates on expanding the empire inland.
